WHAT IS AN EEG?

An electroencephalograph is a recording of the electrical activities of the brain. It is a brain imaging technique. The recording is accomplished by placing a special cap, with 21 electrodes on the patient’s head and ears, as shown in the photograph. We inject conductive electrode gel onto the surface of the head to those 21 sites using a blunt syringe. It is not painful! The electrode cap is connected to a computer, where the recordings are stored.

WHAT RESULTS DO WE GET FROM THE EEG?

To generate this record we acquired the EEG data using the Discovery 24 Channel EEG device manufactured by Brainmaster. The picture shows the brainwave from the Discovery device exported to the Neuroguide Software (Robert Thatcher: www.appliedneuroscience.com) for further analysis.

CONVENTIONAL AND QUANTITATIVE EEG

Conventional or Routine EEG is what neurologists and neurophysiologists typically practice. They take a EEG record, such as the sample given here, and visually inspect it for abnormalities in shape (form), frequency, and distribution across the head, of different EEG frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha, beta).

QUANTITATIVE EEG: DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT APPLICATIONS

Quantitative EEG localizes the cortical and sub-cortical sources of abnormal brainwaves, whatever the medical condition.
Identifies intra- and Interhemispheric brain asymmetries: Left/ Right; Posterior/ Anterior.
It provides information about the extent and speed of information sharing between brain sites (Terms: phase, coherence, comodulation, & synchrony).
Pre-and post EEG following medication regime, surgery, or psychotherapy.
Facilitate decisions regarding medication choice in psychiatric disorders.
Quantitative EEG and Neuropsychological testing complement each other.
Scope of Practice Restriction: When reported by a psychologist, the results of qEEG are not used to diagnose epilepsy. Refer to a neurologist or a neurophysiologist.
EEG test results are an excellent guide for EEG Biofeedback treatment protocols. The current focus of this practice for 2010 however, is assessment & diagnosis.
